Climate

Temperatures at Playa Maya Yucatan range annually from 20°C to 33°C (68°F to 91°F), with an average of over 26°C (80°F). The temperatures in Celestun are very similar to those in Cozumel or Cancun. On average, the temperature in the Yucatan exceeds 26°C (80°F) 339 days of the year. The Yucatan is well known for its year round semi-arid climate and warm sunshine. The climate in the Yucatan is characterized by two main seasons, the rainy season and the dry season.

During the rainy season, May – October, a typical day consists of very hot, sunny weather until approximately 3 in the afternoon. An afternoon shower, which at times can be quite heavy, falls almost daily for 2-4 hours. After the showers the sky clears and the sun begins its descent, creating a breathtaking sunset over the Gulf of Mexico.

The people of the Yucatan welcome the showers as a refreshing relief to the hot early-afternoon sun. Average temperatures during the rainy season range from 26°C (80°F) to 29°C (85°F), with peak afternoon temperatures reaching as high as 37°C.

During the dry season, average daily temperatures range from 23°C (75°F) to 27°C (82°F). Typical winter days consist of hot sunny afternoons with cooler, more refreshing evenings and nights.

There are seasonal mosquitoes, and staff spray the resort grounds (with an ecologically acceptable solution) regularly. Mosquito coils are available in Celestun; bring your repellent.
